It’s hay fever season again, and with all this wonderful weather we have been experiencing, means many of us are spending more time outdoors so it’s inevitable that symptoms of hay fever are high. So rather than reaching for the anti-histamine tablets, there are many ways we can support our immune system and even reduce hay fever symptoms by eating the right foods.
Here I break down some of the best foods that can help reduce symptoms and can easily be included into your diet each day.
Quercetin is a powerfullanti-histamine. Its a potent anti-oxidant that can promote a healthy inflammatory response by regulating histamine peoduction as well as inhibiting its production. It can also improve inflammation within the airways.
Foods high in Quercetin are apples, berriee, onions and broccoli.
Vitamin C is a strong anti-allergy vitamin that can help to reduce symptoms of hay fever. It strengthens the immune system and can quickly reduce allergic reactions as well as being anti-inflammatory.
Foods that’s contain Vitamin C, normally contain quercetin as well. Think red peppers, strawberries, broccoli and even adding a vitamin C supplement can be especially helpful during this season.
Bromelian found in pineapple contains proteolytic which is a strong enzyme that is also both a powerful anti-inflammatory and has anti-swelling properties.
Curcumin the active ingredient found in turmeric has anti-inflammatory properties and has been shown to significantly reduce symptoms of hay fever including allergic rhinitis by reducing nasal airflow resistance. It’s also a potent antioxidant that can also support immune health. As curcumin is not very bioavailable, adding a good quality, well researched bioavailable curcumin supplement is a good option.
